For my job search assignment, I looked at a GIS Specialist position with ELOS Environmental in Hammond, LA. The role focuses on creating maps, managing spatial data, and supporting environmental projects using ArcGIS Pro. I thought it was a good example of how GIS is applied in the real world outside of school.
I chose this job because it ties directly to my interest in environmental work. I like the idea of using GIS to support projects that protect natural resources and improve how we manage the environment. Another reason it stood out to me is that it’s based in Louisiana, which would allow me to grow my career close to home.
Through my coursework, I already have experience with ArcGIS Pro, Python scripting, and analyzing spatial data, which are all important for this position. At the same time, I know I would need to keep building skills like advanced modeling, project management, and fieldwork. This job made me realize how important it is to keep improving technical skills while also being ready for teamwork and professional projects.
Overall, this assignment helped me see how the work I’m doing in class connects directly to actual jobs. It gave me a clearer picture of what employers are looking for and motivated me to keep building my skills for the future.
